How to frame a photo (Composition)
What resolution and image size should I use?
PRINT RESOLUTION: 240 - 300 dpi
SCREEN RESOLUTION (phone, computer, tv): 72 dpi
IMAGE SIZE (“how big you can make it”) depends on the resolution of your original image (film negative or digital file).
If you have a low-res image to start with, you are going to be limited in how big you can print or expand it.
Resizing your image to a smaller size while increasing your dpi can help to make your image clearer SOMETIMES.
BEST RULE OF THUMB: Always start with a high resolution file.
iPhone files can be resized to print 20” x 30” or larger.
What is a jpeg (JPG), PNG, PDF, RAW file?
These are all image files with slightly different formats and purposes.
JPEG and PNG are the most commonly used for all the typical “photo” purposes.
JPEG: Similarly colored pixels get compressed into one color so that the file size stays smaller. NO TRANSPARENCY.
PNG: Very similar to a JPEG with one very useful difference - TRANSPARENCY IS PRESERVED.
PDF: This is an image file technically, but PDF’s are not meant to be used for “photo” purposes. You can think of them as “photos” of documents.
RAW or CAMERA RAW: These are the highest resolution files used in cameras. Often referred to as “native files” since each camera manufacturer (Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc.) has their own RAW file. This is the best file format to use when you want to produce (print) photos with large dimensions and high resolution.
RAW files are the highest quality you can shoot with your camera, but they take up a lot more memory (TOTALLY WORTH IT).
BEST RULE OF THUMB: For digital content creation, stick to JPG’s and PNG’s. PNG’s are very useful for logos and anything you want to treat like a sticker on top of another image.
